PKC Green Living Campaign

CycleRx is applying for funding to install a network of universal ebike chargers under the PKC Green Living Campaign.

Hosting a Public E-Bike Charging Station

CycleRx is a Perthshire-based Community Interest Company working to increase active travel, improve community mobility and support sustainable tourism across Scotland.

We are developing a network of public e-bike charging locations that will allow residents and visitors to travel further by bike, stay longer in local communities and spend more time at local businesses.

Our objective is simple:

Make Perthshire the most e-bike-friendly destination in Scotland

Why E-Bike Charging?

E-bike use is growing rapidly, but public charging infrastructure remains non-existent.

For many riders, particularly:

  • Older adults
  • Leisure cyclists
  • Visitors
  • Less confident riders
  • People travelling between towns and villages

the availability of charging can be the difference between making a journey by bike or taking the car.

A charging network helps:

  • Encourage active travel
  • Support sustainable tourism
  • Increase visitor dwell time
  • Bring new customers to local businesses
  • Support community wellbeing
  • Reduce transport emissions

What Is Being Proposed?

CycleRx is seeking host locations for high-quality public e-bike charging stations.

SEE THE CHARGING STATIONS ON OUR PAGE HERE

Ideal locations include:

  • Cafés
  • Visitor centres
  • Garden centres
  • Hotels
  • Farm shops

The charging equipment allows riders to charge most major e-bike brands using specialist charging cables supplied at the site. No need to carry your own charger.

What We Are Looking For

An ideal host location would:

✅ Be open 7 days of the week

✅ Welcome visitors and passing trade

✅ Have toilet facilities nearby

✅ Have space for a small charging unit

✅ Have space for secure cycle parking

✅ Be willing to help promote the project

✅ Support sustainable travel and tourism

Space Requirements

The charging station itself is compact. Typical charger footprint:

  • Approx. 1.7m wide
  • Approx. 0.3m high
  • Approx. 0.1m deep

A complete installation would typically require:

  • Small wall area or freestanding location
  • Adjacent cycle parking
  • Standard electrical connection

The equipment has a significantly smaller footprint than most EV charging infrastructure.

What Would Be Required From The Host?

1. Site Location

A suitable location for:

  • Charger installation
  • Cycle parking
  • Safe customer access

The best location will be an exterior wall in a courtyard or carpark with space for a bike rack - either existing or new. Proximity to electrical supply is beneficial to keep cost down.

2. Electrical Supply

Access to a nearby 13A single-phase electrical connection - CycleRx will assess suitability and installation requirements.

3. Support For The Green Living Fund Application

The installations will be funded through a grant from the Green Living fund.

We ask hosts to:

  • Provide a letter of support
  • Confirm the proposed location
  • Provide photographs of the site
  • Help demonstrate local demand
  • The fund awards are a public competition based on votes - so we need your help to secure the win

4. Promotion

We will ask hosts to help raise awareness through:

  • Facebook
  • Email newsletters
  • Website
  • Customer communications
  • Local community groups

We will provide material to use in promotion.

What Are The Benefits To The Host?

Increased Visitors

Cyclists actively seek locations where they can stop, recharge and refresh.

Increased Dwell Time

Charging typically encourages visitors to remain on-site for longer periods.

Additional Spending

Visitors often purchase:

  • Food
  • Drink
  • Gifts
  • Retail products
  • Attraction tickets

while their bikes are charging.

Publicity

Host businesses may benefit from:

  • Project launch publicity
  • Active travel promotion
  • Tourism marketing
  • Social media campaigns
  • Local and regional media coverage

Sustainability Credentials

Supporting e-bike infrastructure demonstrates a commitment to:

  • Sustainable tourism
  • Net Zero objectives
  • Community wellbeing
  • Active travel

What Does It Cost?

Our aim is to secure grant funding for the entire installation. Depending on the location, host contributions may include:

  • Contribution towards electrical installation - single 13A connection to your building
  • Hosting and electricity provision only

Electrical use is minimal - each ebike recharge uses roughly half a unit per time - 15p or less, or free if you're on solar.

What Happens Next?

  • 5 October 2026 (5.00pm) – Applications close
  • 26 October – 23 November 2026 – Public voting period
  • By 4 December 2026 – Successful projects announced

If you are interested, CycleRx can arrange a short discussion to:

  • Explain the project
  • Assess the site
  • Review funding opportunities
  • Explore potential locations
  • Discuss installation options

There is no obligation at this stage.
